Alex Prager: Retro To Go

Alex Prager was born in Los Angeles in 1979. She was raised by her grandmother in a small apartment in the suburb of Los Feliz and her curious and restless nature was evident early on. Her nomadic upbringing saw her splitting her time between Florida, California, and Switzerland without truly settling down long enough for a formal education. Prager's interest in art began in her adolescence, but it was in her early twenties that she began to focus on photography after being inspired by the work of William Eggleston.

In keeping with her independent spirit, she eschewed art school and began taking photographs on her own, teaching herself equipment and lighting through trial and error. Prager has since contributed to a number of publications including Details, i-D, Elle Japan, MOJO, and Complex. All the while, she continued to exhibit her work in various galleries worldwide.

After the release of her first book The Book Of Disquiet (2005) Prager was given her first solo show at Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica, CA entitled "Polyester", which was covered by the Los Angeles Times. Along with her 2008 exhibition at The Michael Hoppen Gallery, London, Prager is slated to exhibit in New York in 2009.

Personas is a component of the Metropath(ologies) exhibit, currently on display until Sept 09 at the MIT Museum by the Sociable Media Group from the MIT Media Lab. It uses sophisticated natural language processing and the Internet to create a data portrait of one's aggregated online identity. In short, Personas shows you how the Internet sees you. Enter your name, and Personas scours the web for information and attempts to characterize the person - to fit them to a predetermined set of categories that an algorithmic process created from a massive corpus of data. The computational process is visualized with each stage of the analysis, finally resulting in the presentation of a seemingly authoritative personal profile.

The Philadelphia native, whose real name was Adam Michael Goldstein, was found dead an apparent overdose in his SoHo apartment today. Prescription drugs and a crack pipe were found at the scene. Bottles of pills were found in both the bedroom and the kitchen. He was wearing sweatpants and no shirt.

In a 2007 interview with the New York Times, DJ AM who was a former member of the band Crazy Town, admitted to having begun seriously abusing crack cocaine in his early 20s. But he said he had been sober for the past nine years and had even recently given up smoking.

Last September 19, DJ AM and former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker were badly burned in the crash of a private plane in South Carolina that killed four other people on-board. The plane crashed as it headed down the runway during takeoff. Barker's ex-wife, Playmate Shanna Moakler, responded to news of DJ AM's death on Twitter, writing, "My deepest condolences for DJ AM, you were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and Prayers to his family and friends."

1948: Nike Store Kaleidoscopic Installation

1948 is Nike’s creative playground-retail store neatly tucked away in the old brick railway arches between Shoreditch High Street and Curtain Road in East London. In addition to displaying and selling shoes, 1948 offers an entire art floor for events, installations and a social meeting point.

This installation in 1948 was created by Finland-born illustrator/artist/designer Kustaa Saksi who creates retro-futuristic kaleidoscopic imagery, daunting and irresistible. This installation is all about the historical fun journey of the Nike running shoe. Saksi is a Finnsh illustrator and designer living and working in Amsterdam, via Paris for four years. Saksi sprawling scene creation has a pop-art, retro feel familiar to his other works, and it fits perfectly with Nike’s history as a brand. Saksi’s Volkswagen van and psychedelic colors illustrate the pre-swoosh era in an earnest and deliberately clunky way.

Ah and here's the best part I love the most. The teaser campaign with differences between men and women.

I have seen that tiny tats concealer tube on Sephora, and got really curious about it. Well I even did a preview of the product for my magz, but never really see the result. Today I got Kat Von D before and after pics for the Ad campaign. That looks real.

So, if you plan to cover your tats for special dates such as wedding, job interviews, or your grandma's birthday you might wanna consider using this product. It only costs $25 with 3 options of skin tone: Light, medium and tan. Anyway for concealing tats like Kat on the pics, I'm not sure how many tube you're gonna need. Good luck with that!:)

Look what I've found today! The 9th issue of VNA Magazine! Documenting UK street art through some of the best photographers out there, this issue looks bigger and better than ever, with 100 full colour pages showing work on the streets of London between February and May 2009. There are sections on stencils, graffiti, paste-ups and stickers, as well as features & interviews with Jeff Soto, Ron English, Word To Mother, Ludo, Sickboy and Meggs.

You can grab this copy for £3.50. Issue 10 is already in the pipeline, and scheduled for a September release. But if I were you, I'd rather participate on Arrested Motion contest to win the copy :)

Browse through the Hypebeast as I woke up this morning and this Leica camera caught my attention. Not only because it's Leica C-Lux 3 Limited Edition, but I also found Andre's signature character on the camera! So, I have learned that Andre and Colette have collaborated on these 30 units only camera, and they will soon be available at Colette in both black and white version.

So excited that it's impossible not to post Andre's previous work for the Belvedere Vodka. The video commercial features Andre and his pink graffiti character Mr. IX coming to life and painting the town pink while kickin' it in NYC. It's my favorite!

Lightning Bolt Summer 2010

Surf legends may take a break from the waves, but they never swim away for good. Such is the case with Lightning Bolt, the Maui-based surf company founded in 1972 by Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipley. For over 35 years, Lightning Bolt surfboards have ridden waves with icons like Rabbit Bartholomew, Peter Townend, Ian Cairns, and Rory Russell. While the company might be considered under the radar by sportswear industry standards, for loyal fans Lightning Bolt is always the first place to look for quality boards and surf apparel.

Nina Chakrabarti For I Want You Magazine

Born and spent her early life in Calcutta, India, Nina Chakrabarti moved to the UK in her teens carrying her stamp collection under her arm and little else. She studied illustration at Central St. Martins, and many years later, at The Royal College of Art. Her work is often concerned with collections and the composition of objects. She works using Rotring pens, felt tips, biros, pencils, inks and the Apple Macintosh.
Her tribal series for the free artsy UK Magazine, I Want You, caught my attention. Here goes.

Adding up Disney's loveable Bambi and his forest friends Thumper, Flower the Skunk Owl and other to her Fall Winter campaign, Stella confesses, "I'm a huge Bambi fan, and the film reminds me of my mum". As the clothes in the campaign are looking quite fierce, she wants to contrast them with the innocence of Bambi.

The campaign will appear in the September issues of fashion glossy, hitting pages of V Magazine, global Vogue editions and Another Magazine. Good work, Bambina!

After almost 3 years battle with anal cancer, Farrah Fawcett died at the age of 62 at St. John Hospital in Santa Monica. Her only child, Redmond, was not present. He's currently in jail and a petition will have to be filed for Redmond to be able to attend the funeral.

Continuing with the pop-up store phenomenon that we seem to be in the midst of, Louis Vuitton has teamed up with Japanese retail brand Seibu, in opening a temporary outlet in Seibu’s gigantic Ikebukuro department store in Tokyo – The Louis Vuitton/ Underground/ goes with a raw and industrial look and is completely different in terms of interior than other Vuitton spaces. LOUIS VUITTON underground is a concept store, and will only be running for a limited period of time.

Tim Burton has reportedly signed Johnny Depp for his forthcoming Alice In Wonderland adaptation. The film, which will be presented in Disney Digital 3-D, will feature Depp as The Mad Hatter, according to The Sun. With Helena Bonham-Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Alice in Wonderland is something I really look forward to. I mean, who doesn't love Deep x Burton?

sARTurday: Daniel & Geo Fuchs ToyGiants Exhibition

As the point of departure for their photo series TOYGIANTS , the artists Daniel and Geo Fuchs use the, to a certain extent, highly political world of toy figures, which are sold and traded internationally. The artists created portraits of toys in large-sized prints: American comic heroes of the 1960s; muscle-bound fantasy figures; Japanese Manga superstars; actors and directors such as Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Quentin Tarantino; even world-leaders such as George W. Bush and his opponent Saddam Hussein; or artists such as Andy Warhol who are presented as “toys”.

The artists Daniel and Geo Fuchs began their work on TOYGIANTS with Batman , Superman and Hulk. The belief in progress is written on the faces of these figures, as is the idealism with which comic heroes are charged. How different the worn-out and spent faces of Willis or Stallone, a soldier of the Cold War era for whom it seems no task remains. And the borders between reality and fiction disappear completely when the portraits of figures of Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden are shown.

The toy figures photographed by Daniel and Geo Fuchs all come from the Collection Varol, which in the meantime includes over 10,000 objects. In the rooms of Munich’s artist/prince Franz von Stuck, who like no other artist of his day understood the concept of self-promotion, the works in TOYGIANTS unfold their, to a certain extent, terrifying, iconic effect.

At the centre of the exhibition are questions regarding the power of self-promotion through the media by political figures or actors in a networked world of entertainment and “war games”. The iconographic strategies of a president climbing out of a fighter plane equipped with military gear are scrutinised by Daniel and Geo Fuchs in their photograph of an originally packaged George W. Bush. They leave the interpretation of the empty, pale-white faces to the visitor: what is real and what is staged ? -Michael Buhrs, director Museum Villa Stuck, Munich

You can often divide people into two distinct groups - "hat people" and "non hat people". Wearing a hat takes confidence, courage and a unique personal style. Whether the hat is worn for comfort or a statement or both, the choice of hat says a lot about the person.

Rike Feurstein (a self-confessed hat-aholic) has done a lot for the hat industry with her clean, minimalistic, sculptural shaped designs. Her unique perspective breathes new life into classic shapes with the choice of irreverent fabrics or colours.

She references iconic shapes from the 40's and 60's and reworks the look by injecting her own twist. Rike studied in New York and London before opening her own studio and showroom in Berlin and has an international stockist's resume including Barney's, Saks, Harvey Nichols, Tsum and Le Bon Marche. — Kate Vandermeer

California’s favorite skate brand, Vans, recently partnered up with independent artist Parra to produce a limited version of the Era. The vulcanized lowtop draws inspiration from a number of sources, and features Parra’s cursive logo stitched into the tongue to go along with its white/orange/pink/robin’s egg blue color scheme. The term, “Don’t Forget to Skate in These!” is printed onto the model’s sockliner, a byword I wouldn’t mind being attached to all collaborative skate shoes. Born and raised in Sheffield, Gemma Slack had an innate sense for art and moved to London to cultivate her creativity. She enrolled at the Chelsea College or Art & Design in Fine Arts and was encouraged to try fashion design.

Slack launched her first gothic inspired collection in Spring/Summer ’09 after a two-year apprenticeship with Gareth Pugh. Her unique flair for combining extra-ordinary materials into tailored garments has grabbed the attention of Diane Pernet, milliner Pies Atkinson and musician Roisin Murphy. Gemma Slack has emerged as one of London’s creative talents to watch in 2009.

Now it’s time for another native of Berlin, Feride Uslu, to collaborate with Nike on the 1World project. Uslu whose brand Uslu Airlines is known for various collaborations with some of the world’s finest brands but more so for their high quality nail polish.

One of the more glaring additions on the final product is the stylish scarf tied onto the right shoe. The pink shoelaces are also an added detail to this shoe. As for the shoe as a whole, this Nike 1World Project is inspired by an airplane. It contains a sheep lining in representation of the pilot seats in the cockpit. In addition, the neon yellow tongue stands for the security vests of airport workers, while the green logo tag represents the signal color of the tower on all airports. To continue the theme, this sneaker is complimented with pink shoelaces which symbolize cords of a parachute. Last but not least, the insole reflects the color spectrum of Uslu’s brand.

Samantha (founder) decided to go digital. "I’ve been doing a lot of thinking since I went away and well I might as well just come straight out with it….I’m not going to be working on Missbehave anymore. Ouch. It hurts to say out loud. I haven’t issued a statement on the site yet but I thought that I would take baby steps and start here. It’s sad because Missbehave was my life for so long. It was once a great Magazine and with time could have become a really great website, but it seemed like each week my pregnancy sunk in, the more my head was somewhere else, like here, writing about funny stuff that happens at the playground or my toddler shopping addiction. I’ll admit it, my lifestyle is changing. I can hardly believe that I’m going to have 2 f*cking kids! It all happened so fast, and let me tell you, the idea of the second is a doozy. A toddler and an infant scares the sh*t outta me! It’s not that Missbehave won’t always be part of my lifestyle, but the fact is I’m ready to move on. My first piece of business is to be a, I can’t believe I’m about to say this…a s-s-s-tay at home m-m-m-om or a housewife or whatever you call it, for a little while anyway. Actually, I’m going to name my new position ‘Mom About Town’. That’s better!"

Not only is their skin porous like ours, but their skin texture and color is very similar, and like us, they come in different sizes, shapes and forms. The Tony Hawk Ride is a skateboard like controller for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It features will use "a combination of accelerometers and motion sensors" and require no other controller. You will control the game by riding on the board. It will be available for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 for 2009 holiday season. Buzz Monkey is developing the Wii system version.

“This is the game I’ve always wanted to make,” said Tony Hawk, who has been directly involved with development of the project. “Playing on the board is unlike any other game, and I’m excited for everyone to have the chance to feel what it’s really like to experience the true feeling of skateboarding.”

Skateboarders Dreamed Place to Work

Italian practice studiometrico converted an old cinema in Milan, into the new Bastard flagship store, which also includes a suspended bowl and offices for Comvert.

The main entrance of the Cinema, a regular room of 70 sqm, has been transformed in the first bastard Store, conceived not only to sell products, but mainly to meet the people that belong to the bastard universe.

All of the furniture are mounted on wheels and can be freely placed on the original marble floor. The cashier desks and the clothes displays have been assembled using left-over wooden panels from the offices construction, the dressing rooms have been fitted out with the left-over wooden elements from the bastard Bowl. A system of wooden elements has been designed to display skateboards, sunglasses and goggles. Comvert partners collaborators and employees will work one shift a month in the shop so that they are in close contact with the product they usually design, distribute and sell

In the 15 m tall and huge space of the old pit, against the wall on which the old screen used to lay, the metallic, black painted, two storey structure of the products depot has been placed. The depot can be accessed from the administrative department or directly from a courtyard - connected with Via Slataper – that lays along one of the sides of the building.

One of the walls of the courtyard is characterized by an enigmatic graffiti drawing done by artist and skateboarder Lorenzo Fonda. The products depot is the predominant element inside the volume of the pit and it doesn’t just act as a big container for the goods, but, more importantly, it carries and - through an industrial steep staircase attached to its structure - provides access to the bastard Bowl.
